Structure of Sewing Classes

Greetings Good People,
While I am sharing with you, my sewing business development, I felt it necessary to share with you the functions of my business as well. Before I do that, please read my personal disclaimer:
My Personal Disclaimer: All the information in my blog especially about my business is through my own personal research and all statements I make regarding anything is strictly and solely my opinion. Although, I have tons of sewing experience, I do not claim to be a "guru" by any means. I do not offer my sewing business services online at this time, but I do offer tips, tricks, and will answer any sewing questions to the best of my abilities. If you have any sewing or business related questions for me, feel free to ask. And, If you live in the Detroit, Michigan area, and are interested in learning the art of sewing, please feel free to send me an email or comment and we will get you started.
Right now, I am marketing my business locally to teach people who are interested in learning the art of sewing to sew some great, Sewing Treasures (…hence, the name of my business J). Currently I am offering private lessons whereas I will teach no more than two people at one time. Private lessons last for 6 sewing sessions at 2 hours per session. The cost for private lesson is $125.00 per person; days and times are agreed upon by the student and instructor. The location of these private lessons can be held at the client’s home or the instructor’s home. Interested students will have access to use one of my sewing machines; although, students are also encouraged to bring their own sewing machine, if available; what better way to learn than on your own sewing machine.
Because products and services within the sewing industry are ever changing and creative needs are in constant demand, Sewing Treasures will hold numerous workshops throughout the year to meet those demands and keep current and former students abreast of any changes within the sewing/fashion industry. Students must be at a sewing skill level as advanced before taking the workshops or advanced sewing classes, however this rule does not apply to the Children’s workshop. I offer the following workshops:
·         Timesaving Sewing Techniques-in this workshop, students will learn how to reduce their sewing time in half. When faced with multiple projects, there are numerous techniques to consider before getting started.

·         Recycle/Repair Your Wardrobe- in this workshop students will be shown various creative ideas to spruce up their wardrobe. Students are encouraged to bring their clothing items with them and we will work on them during the workshop.

·         Home Decorating Workshop- learn how to make valances, slip-covers for couches, chairs, blankets, and throw pillows to give any room a new look.

·         Mother’s Day Gifts- in this workshop work on a beautiful gift for mom or simply get gift ideas.

·         Father’s Day Gifts- create a multi-purposed wallet or make a nice necktie or handkerchief for dad.

·         Sewing for Special Occasions-learn techniques for working with specialty fabrics like laces, netting, satin, chiffon, and silks, just to name a few. Learn special hemming techniques and special seams such as princess seams for prom dresses, wedding dresses, and evening gowns. This workshop is designed for the intermediate to advanced sewer.

·         Children Sewing Treasures Workshop –in this monthly four hour workshop for children ages 7-10, children create beautiful, easy, hand and/or machine sewn treasures for themselves family or friends. This workshop is scheduled four hours longs to allow parents to run their Saturday errands while keeping their children busy. I will also be providing all of the materials and a healthy snack will be served.

·         Get to Know Your Sewing Machine Workshop- in this monthly 2 hour workshop, students will be encouraged to bring their own sewing machines and we will go over the logistics of all the fun things the machine can do for them. Also, all the available machine feet on the market to create new and exciting projects.

On the first day of class or private lessons, I will provide all students with a folder of handouts that I created; that I believe is necessary to understand the rest of the classes as well as the process of sewing. This folder is referred to as “Treasured Guidelines”; it is housed in a two pocket folder with fasteners and it will contain the following handouts:
·         Parts of the Sewing Machine
·         Sewing Terms & Definitions
·         Sewing Tools
·         Lesson Plan for 6 sessions
·         Supply List (will receive at registration)
·         Sewing Safety tips
·         Understanding Pattern markings
·         Reading the Pattern Envelope
·         Student Measurement Chart
·         Blank paper for writing notes
·         End of class session Evaluation form (to evaluate class sessions)
*All students will be asked to bring these with them at every session.
I developed the folder to aid in the teaching process as well as to serve to be helpful for students when they are at home working on projects. Here is a picture of the folder:

Here is an inside look into the folder:

The label on the front of the folder is from Vista Print which is the company I mentioned in my first post. They make great marketing materials for businesses, they have great quality, and the prices are highly affordable! Here is their link if you want to check them out www.vistaprint.com
